The first bridge of Besalú was probably built in the 11th century by Count Guillem el Gras (1030-1050). It was swept away by a flash flood in 1315, but was rebuilt thanks to a tax levied by King Jaume II.
On the first weekend in September, Besalú goes back a thousand years in history and transforms the old quarter into a fantasy venue where visitors are transported back to medieval times.
The value of this historical and architectural site makes Besalú one of the most important mediaeval towns in Catalonia. The 2-day fair involves all the townspeople, as well as the streets, shops, buildings, river walk, defence walls, squares, and hidden corners of the town.
