Sport and adventure

Water Sports

Rapids, crosscurrents, and whirling eddies. The force of the Pyrenean rivers unleashed during the annual snowmelt period now attracts adventure sports lovers from far and wide. The tradition started with the former rafters, the original white-water experts, who would transport goods downstream every spring, together with the timber they used for making the boats.

Years of experience, state-of-the-art safety measures, high-quality equipment, specialist white-water sports companies operating in the area, and the major events and championships held here (the Noguera Pallaresa Rally celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013), make the Pyrenees a benchmark for water sports destinations.

The specialist companies operating in the Pyrenees offer a wide range of water sports activities.

White-water options include rafting, kayaking, canoeing, hydrospeed, canyoning and river hiking, among many others. If you prefer calmer waters, you can try sea scooters, windsurfing, waterskiing, or underwater diving.

The Pyrenees are full of spectacular lakes, rivers, and reservoirs that are ideal for practising water sports.

River Noguera Pallaresa

Located in the heart of the Pyrenees, the Noguera Pallaresa offers 60km of navigable waters and stretches to suit all tastes and levels as it runs from Beret Plateau to Terradets, via Collegats Canyon, Sant Antoni reservoir, and Cellers village. Thrill-seekers can test their skills on the more complicated stretches during the snowmelt months of May and June.

River Garonne

The Garonne rises on Beret Plateau at the westernmost edge of the Catalan Pyrenees, flowing through towns and villages in Val d’Aran County and providing a privileged venue for white-water activities such as rafting and canyoning from Les Bordes, in the village of Les.

River Segre

The River Segre Olympic Park (La Seu d’Urgell) has a white-water course with an adjustable flow that facilitates canoeing, kayaking, and rafting for beginners and experts alike.

River Noguera Ribagorçana

Known for the quality of its waters, the Noguera Ribagorçana is an up-and-coming Pyrenean water sports destination, with many activities taking place on Escales Reservoir and in the canyons running into the river, of which Viu de Llevata is considered among the best in Europe.

River Freser

Canyoning lovers coming to Girona province can enjoy their sport in the gorges of the River Freser, the stream at Queralbs Cave, or the River Fluvià basin in the Sadernes-Montagut area.
