The county capital is Puigcerdà. Cerdanya County spans part of Lleida province and part of Girona province, and mainly consists of the upper valley of the River Segre, a sunny, east-west facing valley that is one of the largest in Europe. The diverse nature of the landscape combines Mediterranean features, sub-Mediterranean forests, and Alpine meadows.
It is an ideal place for hiking, fishing, mountain biking, Alpine or cross-country skiing, etc.

The Grand Tour of Cerdanya is a mountain circuit running between 1000m and 2000m in altitude along the paths formerly linking up the villages in the county.
In the 1940s, an impressive fortification line of nearly 10,000 bunkers was built along the Pyrenees from Cap de Creus (Catalonia) to the Basque Country. Many were located in Cerdanya County, which was considered a strategic defence point.
The park covers an area of over 40,000 hectares, and includes Alt Urgell, Cerdanya, and Berguedà Counties. The two large mountain ranges of Cadí and Moixeró meet at Tancalaporta Pass to create an impressive barrier extending over 30 kilometres.
